The Director of the Library reports to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The administrative duties include overseeing acquisitions, supervising of staff, guiding development of the strategic plan, implementing assessment initiatives, and participating as a General Council member of TRAILS. TRAILS is a Montana University System (MUS) library consortium and is currently leading MUS system-wide initiatives. The Director of the Library ensures that UMW has a voice in significant system-wide decisions that impact our institution, such as the implementation of Open Educational Resources (OER), purchase of library resources, resource-sharing initiatives, and continuing education opportunities for library staff, faculty, and administration. The Director of the Library is an energetic, organized, and dedicated individual who leads progressive strategic thinking and planning to advance the work of the University of Montana Western library.Responsibilities
- - Plan and develop library resources, services, and programs that support the UMW’s strategic plan and appropriately address the needs of the University and the community.
- - Develop, implement, and routinely evaluate the library strategic plan.
- - Administer the annual library budget and manage library personnel.
- - Participate in the statewide library community, including active involvement in the Montana Library Association and/or other professional organizations.
- - Participate in the Treasure State Academic Information & Library Services (TRAILS), the state of Montana academic library consortium.
- - Select all print acquisitions in collaboration with faculty and staff.
- - Manage UMW electronic resources.
- - Contribute to university-wide committees and special events.
- - Engage in professional development.
- - Demonstrate the potential to develop a record of scholarly research and engagement in the library profession.
- - Other duties as assigned.
- - A Master’s Degree in Library and Information Sciences from an American Library Association accredited institution, or two years of previous experience as an Academic Library Administrator.
- - Experience working within the framework of a library consortium to meet the needs of an individual library.
- - Evidence of prior substantial contributions to both an individual library and to a greater library community.
- - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- - Commitment and demonstrated ability to engage in positive, respectful, and collaborative working relationships with diverse students and colleagues.
- - Experience working with library services platforms.
- - Demonstrated leadership in local, state, and national library advocacy efforts.
- - Demonstrated history of collaboration with libraries outside of higher education such as public libraries, school libraries and special libraries such as state libraries, law libraries, and hospital libraries.
- - Certification in Library Administration by the Montana State Library.
- - Active involvement in professional library associations.
