$21.06-$31.59Actively supports and upholds the City's stated mission and values. Performs semi-skilled and unskilled laborer duties associated with the Solid Waste Section. Under the direct supervision of the Solid Waste Landfill Supervisor, employees of this class perform manual labor and equipment operations duties associated with landfill operations, as well as duties associated with landfill litter program. The position entails a high degree of physical exertion and heavy lifting and requires a minimum 6 months of manual labor before equipment training and operations begin. Duties include working in adverse weather conditions.ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

Examples of the Work Performed
  • Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Working with other landfill staff in providing day to day operational and labor support.
  • Assists in picking up windblown litter at the landfill.

  • Operates hand tools and hand power equipment
  • May drive and operate water truck as assigned.
  • Snow plowing activities as assigned.
  • After training on various solid waste landfill equipment may be assigned to weekend shift.
  • Cleans and services solid waste landfill equipment and vehicles as required.
  • Makes simple field repairs and services equipment as required for daily operation.
  • Performs other solid waste manual duties as assigned, equipment maintenance, welding, litter pickup, etc.
  • Assists the public as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QualificationsMINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Valid Arizona Class B Commercial Driver License with tanker endorsement - or ability to obtain one with a six-month period of being in the position.
  • One year of experience performing unskilled manual labor.
  • One year of equipment operation experience.
  • Or any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the above Minimum Requirements.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
  • Experience performing strenuous manual laborer tasks.
  • Some welding & maintenance
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.
  • Must be willing and able to work weekends and holidays as assigned.
  • Incumbents of this position are subject to pre-employment drug screening, post-employment random, post-accident, and reasonable suspicion drug/alcohol screening, consistent with Arizona State and federal Commercial Driver regulations.
Supplemental InformationREQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
  • Ability to perform heavy physical and lifting exertion, sometimes under adverse weather conditions.
  • After training, must be able to drive a large truck in city conditions.
  • Ability to perform strenuous labor tasks and operate equipment and trucks skillfully, safely and according to solid waste standard operating procedures and industry standards.
  • Ability to detect needed repairs, make necessary simple adjustments, and perform maintenance on trucks and equipment.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to work independently in the performance of regular working duties.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to write simple reports and fill out report forms.
  • Basic understanding of Pre-Trip Post trip inspections of landfill equipment. Backhoe, water truck, and loader.
  • Basic understanding - and Roll-Off truck for litter control.
  • Effectively operate - for snow Removal and maintenance of refrigerator evacuation pad.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger/handle/feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop/kneel/crouch/crawl, talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to sit.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Vision requirements for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Working conditions include frequent exposure to work near moving mechanical parts and outdoor weather conditions, regular exposure to work in wet or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration, and occasional exposure to work in high precarious places, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
