- Ensures proper procedures and policies are followed.
- Assist the Chief RTT with daily clinical coordination. Includes operational workflow and patient scheduling.
- Help with scheduling assistance to the Practice Coordinators when specific needs cannot be met with standard blocked times.
- Help ensure staffing coverage is adequate. Reviews staff vacation schedule and coordinates machine coverage.
- Coordinates services with other patient care treatment personnel to ensure proper patient care.
- Perform audits to ensure all daily duties related to patient care is assigned and completed by the end of day.
- Participates in department QA projects.
- Informs Chief RTT and/or Technical Director of any problems or potential problems affecting the overall quality, condition, and performance of treatment unit.
- Attend assigned clinical meetings with Chief RTTs as needed.
- Assessment:
- Identifies type and area to be treated in preparation. As appropriate performs simulation before actual treatment.
- Utilize available reports and medical record information to increase awareness of current or potential problems.
- Recognize if patient is having problems and take appropriate action. Seek council with appropriate professionals.
- Treatment Coordination and Implementation:
- Set-up equipment and computer.
- Prepare and check all required documents prior to treatment. Including consents, MD orders and approvals, Plan QA, New Start Check list, etc…
- Place reference markings on patient's body, if needed.
- Position patient for treatment and verify imaging requirements.
- Perform TIME OUT procedures.
- Document treatment in EMR and appropriate files.
- Perform minor equipment adjustments as needed.
- Coordinates new patient set-ups; ensures all necessary personnel and patient records are present and available; keeps process moving efficiently.
- Advocacy/Patient Education:
- Respond to emotional needs of patients by demonstrating sensitivity to their emotional state and relating in an appropriate manner.
- Explain treatment procedures, side effects, and dietary and skin care procedures to patients.
- Instruct students and cooperate with other department staff (residents, nurses, treat planning, etc.).
- Maintains liaison between patients and department; keeps patients informed of delays, explains problems, and attempts to quickly settle any patient difficulties.
- Coordination/Communication:
- Maintain open communication and facilitate continuity of care for patients and family with members of the health care team.
- Participate in patient centered conferences as requested.
- Actively participate in staff meetings.
- Maintains adequate level of supplies to meet treatment unit needs.
- Share and maintain good communication amongst the RTT team.
- Professionalism/Education:
- Demonstrate courtesy, common sense and follow through in all communications and practices.
- Explains and demonstrates required technical procedures to staff and students assigned to treatment unit.
- Provides technical guidance and expertise to staff and students to ensure that problems are resolved.
- Assesses staff and student performance and provides specific feedback and additional training as needed.
- Assume responsibility for own career growth, recognizing the need to increase knowledge and keeping informed of current trends and developments within own area of practice.
- Expand skills and show initiative.
- Comply with work related policies including license renewal and other related certifications.
- Comply with all Medical Center policies and procedures for infection control, safety, administrative, and clinical practices. Comply with activities mandated by The Joint Commission.
- Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Therapeutic Radiology.
- Licensure by the State of California in Therapeutic Radiology.
- BLS certified.
- Senior Radiation Therapist; Five years of experience in Radiation Therapy Technology.
- Demonstrates thorough knowledge and ability to train others with department's general LINACs, CT Simulation, Record Verify systems and EMR.
- Ability to act independently, ability to exercise appropriate independent judgment regarding set-up or treatment decisions.
- Excellent verbal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with patients and all department staff members. This includes, but not limited to Attendings, Residents, Physicists, Administrative Assistants and RNs.
- Positive attitude toward teamwork and patient safety. Collaborates with Chief RTTs to carry out high level objectives and QA projects that extends and improves the Radiation Oncology department and patient safety.
- Demonstrated or verified Technical Ability
- Needs to be able to coordinate and respond to ER situations appropriately. Includes, but not limited to machine breakdowns, ER add-ons, and Facility ERs.
- Ability to cover Chief Therapist duties on short term basis.
