DESCRIPTIVE STATEMENT:This is a non-exempt, temporary/part-time position limited to 1,300 hours annually. Under the general supervision of the of the Fleet Shop Supervisor.The City of Pueblo is looking for a technician to upfit various city vehicles and equipment. Equipment being installed includes, but is not limited to, police cages, radar, center consoles, mounting antennas, public safety lightning, sirens, and other electrical components as required. Candidate will work collaboratively with other city departments for city vehicle and heavy specialized equipment installs as necessary. The candidate must possess their own basic hand tools such as sockets, wrenches, etc. The Upfit Technician will be responsible for wiring the power hand offs for specialized equipment such as in-car radios, video systems, and wireless modems as well as responsible for assisting with the de-commissioning of obsolete or wrecked vehicles.This job description is an overview and is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the functions and tasks required of the position.DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform installation of specialized equipment
  • Test/troubleshoot specialized equipment
  • Disassemble the interior and exterior of new vehicles (seats, carpeting, flooring, dash and interior panels, headliners, lights to prepare vehicle for installation of new systems
  • Complete installations for diverse range of vehicle makes and models, including sedans, SUVs, commercial trucks, and heavy machinery
  • Remove and install bolt-on components such as hoods, deck lids, fenders, trim, doors, glass and interior components, and verify dimensional accuracy
  • Remove and recover specialized equipment from end-of-life vehicles
  • Maintain and track materials for jobs
  • Maintain safe, clean, and orderly tools and work area
  • Complete all required paperwork and documentation
IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS:
  • Ability to read and comprehend job-related instructions and information whether electronic or paper based.
  • Working knowledge of tools of trade
  • Must be able to perform all work adhering to DOT, safety, and maintenance policies; including but not limited to the correct selection and use of appropriate tools, PPE, machine guarding, and established best safety practice.
  • May perform the duties of similar classifications of an equal or lower pay grade.
Physical Requirements:The physical standards an employee must meet in order to perform the essential job duties with or without a reasonable accommodation include, but are not limited to:
  • Lifts, carries, pushes, or pulls equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds, frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 30 pounds
  • Frequently climbs in and out of vehicles or up and down stairs
  • Uses manual dexterity to manipulate supplies, tools, and equipment
  • Uses visual acuity to read operating manuals and instructions, safely operate a vehicle and equipment, identify hazards, and perform daily functions
  • Frequently performs activities requiring a full range of body movements including sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, crawling, twisting, and balancing
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:This position requires:
  • Up-to-date knowledge of vehicle electrical systems
  • Ability to work successfully with and provide good customer service to supervisors, other City employees, departments, the public, and other agencies.
  • Ability to drive automobiles and light trucks.
  • Skill and ability to perform basic mathematical calculations including basic addition, subtraction, division, and percentages.
  • Ability to solve problems using sound judgement.
  • Ability to communicate orally in person, by telephone, and writing in an effective manner with a variety of individuals
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to order required parts from outlined specifications
  • Ability to verify parts and supplies against specifications
  • Ability to perform all the job duties in a safe manner

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:In addition to the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, the position requires:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must have a basic familiarity with a variety of automotive, light, and heavy vehicles
  • A minimum of 1 year of successful experience installing and upfitting aftermarket components including electrical components to vehicles.
  • Must submit to and pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • A valid driver's license at the time of application, and a valid Colorado driver's license within 30 days of employment
  • License restrictions that may hinder your ability to drive on City business, such as an interlock, will be cause for disqualification
  • During the course of employment, a valid license must be maintained, and the employee must notify the City immediately upon changes to the status of their license
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:This position works primarily indoors in a vehicle maintenance facility with some time spent outdoors. The incumbent may be exposed to noise, moving parts, fumes, dust, smoke, and fluids used in a vehicle maintenance facility such as anti-freeze, motor oil, windshield washing fluid, etc. The employee may be exposed to blood borne pathogens, bodily fluids and/or biosolids while performing work on public safety and/or wastewater vehicles.Due to Federal and State Criminal Justice System access requirements, classifications that access and maintain criminal justice information may also be required, as a condition of employment, to not have been convicted of and/or have pending charges of a felony or misdemeanor crime that would deny or otherwise restrict access to criminal justice information. Beginning January 1, 2021, all employers in Colorado are required to provide paid sick leave to employees under the Healthy Families and Workplaces Act (“HFWA”). Said leave is accrued at one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 48 hours.
Per the Act, leave may be used for any of the following reasons:
  • The employee has a mental or physical illness, injury, or health condition; needs a medical diagnosis, care, or treatment related to such illness, injury, or condition; or needs to obtain preventive medical care.
  • The employee needs to care for a family member who has a mental or physical illness, injury, or health condition; needs a medical diagnosis, care, or treatment related to such illness, injury, or condition; or needs to obtain preventive medical care.
  • The employee or family member has been the victim of domestic abuse, sexual assault, or harassment and needs to be absent from work for purposes related to such crime; or
  • A public official has ordered the closure of the school or place of care of the employee's child or of the employee's place of business due to a public health emergency, necessitating the employee's absence from work.
Consistent with the HWFA, part-time temporary and seasonal employees of the City shall not carry forward more than forty-eight (48) hours of unused sick leave from one year to the next.
Pueblo Municipal Code 6-6-5.5, 6-6-5 and 6-6-6City employment as a temporary or seasonal employee means that the most you can expect to work is 1300 hours in a calendar year. Depending on the work schedule required by the hiring department, this means more time to spend with your family and/or doing other activities.
