SummaryThe City of Tualatin is recruiting an energetic, enthusiastic, and outgoing individual to assist in leading our youth recreation programs and special events. Come be a part of our recreation staff and make a difference in a young person's life this summer by facilitating exercise, adventure, and learning via our youth summer camps and programs.This position will work primarily with the Summer Teen Adventure Camp or Youth Summer Camp program. The schedule is planned to be approximately 35-40 hours a week from June 17-August 16. Opportunities for intermittent, on-call work is possible throughout the rest of the year.Teen Adventure Camp is a day-trip based program for youth in grades 7-12. Staff in this placement will be responsible for transporting and supervising youth while participating in scheduled field trips, and providing a fun and safe experience for participants.The Youth Summer Camp program is a site-based day camp designed for children in grades 1-6. Senior Youth Leaders in this placement will be acting as lead staff, responsible for planning, organizing, and direct leadership of summer camp activities.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesIncludes the following; other duties may be assigned.Plans, develops and directs City-wide recreation programs or classes in one or more of the following areas: athletics, camps, disabled/adaptive, social and cultural, environmental, or other recreational activities. Participates in organizing the necessary materials, tools, and supplies for varying program needs. Organizes and procures tools, material and supplies needed for defined programs.Provides direct program leadership.Prepares program submittals, evaluations, and reports. Keeps records, requisitions equipment, materials and supplies.In collaboration with departmental staff, develops a schedule or timeline within the program that addresses city and/or department objectives.Monitors, operates within, and makes recommendations on program budget to immediate supervisor.Develops community interest and participation in programs. Publicizes activities and programs.Ensures appropriate security and safety of recreational facility, public properties, activities, programs and participants.Leads work of other interns or volunteers; plans work schedules, makes work assignments, and/or provides training.Recognizes unsafe conditions and reports to appropriate department staff.Plans, develops, organizes and instructs specialized activity classes such as physical fitness, music, arts and crafts, dance, environmental education, community outreach, and special interests. Teaches, counsels, and leads teams or other youth groups.Performs general clerical and staff functions, including but not limited to: preparing reports and records data to determine program impact and/or participant contribution. May also perform activity registration, checking out equipment, scheduling the use of facilities, applying fee schedules, , maintaining records, answering phones and inquiries, providing information to the public, and various general custodial tasks.Drives participants to recreational activities utilizing city vehicles. Drives to trainings, other city facilities, and vendor sites as needed.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervision is not generally a responsibility of this position. Must be able to direct and lead the work activities of other interns or volunteers.QualificationsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Education and/or Experience: Three years of experience in a related field; two years of experience in supervising recreation programs; Three years of college education in a related field; or any equivalent combination of experience, training and education which would enable the person to perform the essential functions of the position.Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, employees, volunteers or partners of organization. Bilingual (Spanish) fluency is preferred.Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.Computer Skills: Ability to operate a personal computer and related software.Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Possession of a valid Oregon driver's license and acceptable driving record. For positions required to drive the 15-passenger van, there is also a 21 year age requirement along with passing an internal driving course and exam. First Aid/CPR certification at time of appointment or within a timeframe determined by management.Other Skills and Abilities: Strong interpersonal skills.Skill in the leadership of several broad types of recreation activities. Personal skills in specialty activities and in their leadership.Ability to work with people of all ages. Ability to plan and implement various recreational activities designed for people of all ages. Ability to maintain effective relationships with associates, volunteers, participants, parents and the general public. Ability to maintain records and make reports. Ability to present ideas and recommendations clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.Other Qualifications: Knowledge of principles, terminology, techniques, methods, supplies and equipment, basic rules and skills involved in a variety of recreation programs or a specific program area. Ability to instruct and supervise recreation programs efficiently. Knowledge of techniques in supervising various recreational activities or specific program activity. Some knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of the recreation and education profession, and the purpose, use, and benefit of various elements of specific programs. Skill in leadership of several broad types of recreation activities or a specific activity.
