The City of Gaithersburg needs Team Leaders, Assistant Team Leaders, and Counselors for its operated through the City's Department of Parks, Recreation & Culture. Gaithersburg's Summer Camp Program consists of up to eight weeks of camp activities for children ages 5 to 14.Summer Camp Team Leaders & Assistant Team Leaders provide onsite leadership for and plan, organize, lead, and direct activities of a City summer camp program; they work directly with activities in a variety of settings, assist campers and parents, provide information and services, and maintain and manage a safe, secure, and enjoyable atmosphere for all.Must have a high school diploma or equivalentTeam Leaders must have at least two years of previous paid experience working with youthAssistant Team Leaders must have at least six months of previous paid experience working with youthStarting hourly rate $17.25 to $20.00 per hour depending on experience and qualificationsCamp Counselors assist with implementing and organizing a variety of camp programming, supervise and plan activities for participants, and perform other fundamental assignments in support of the summer camp program.Must be at least 18 years of ageMust have a high school diploma or equivalentPrevious experience working with youth desirable but not necessaryStarting hourly rate $16.70 to $16.80 per hour depending on qualificationsApplicants must be available to work weekdays (Monday through Friday) from June 17 through August 9, 2024, approximately 30 to 45 hours per week. Applicants must also be able to attend all required staff training sessions prior to the beginning of camp. Direct deposit of paychecks is a condition of employment for all City of Gaithersburg employees.Job FunctionsCamp Team Leaders/Assistant Team Leaders will:
  • Provide or assist with providing overall supervision of camp operation, campers, and part-time staff.
  • Coordinate on-site activities and trips.
  • Plan, create, and carry out appropriate program activities.
  • Ensure the camp facility is safe and secure and that all are participating in an appropriate manner.
  • Prepare the camp facility by cleaning, sweeping, and collecting and disposing of trash.
  • Arrange supplies and equipment for patrons/participants and ensure that equipment and supplies are functioning properly.
  • Maintain camper registrations and emergency notification.
  • Provide a thorough level of communication with parents, camp staff, and facility staff.
  • Serve as a model for and promote responsible behavior and high standards of safety.
  • Administer first aid and/or CPR if necessary.
Camp Counselors will:
  • Plan and lead, or assist with planning and leading, a variety of structured camp activities.
  • Provide constant supervision for approximately 15 to 20 camp program participants.
  • Plan, create, and carry out appropriate program activities; assist with program setup and breakdown.
  • Ensure a positive, fun, and safe environment for summer camp participants.
  • Organize games and activities and perform other event/activity related tasks as assigned.
  • Perform administrative support functions (i.e., photocopy, count fliers for distribution, affix labels).

  • All applicants must possess a high level of maturity and be able to deal with children, parents, and other staff in a positive, courteous, tactful, and professional manner. Must be safety conscious and committed to providing a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for all participants.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification (may be obtained through the City upon hire)
  • Moderate physical effort is required; must be able to lift/carry materials up to 50 pounds.
