Position Functions/Purpose:To teach and develop the secondary Visual Arts programs in a secondary school.
Major Responsibilities:
  • Teach a sequential visual arts curriculum as defined by TEA and the District Curriculum Planning Guides.
  • Coordinate activities within the school which pertain to visual arts and the curriculum.
  • Target instructional techniques, teaching strategies, 21st century terminology and skills, and district initiatives to prepare students to be college and workforce ready.
  • Attend required content professional development and demonstrate a desire for continuous growth in the field of visual arts.
  • Participate in student and teacher field and exhibition events, especially VASE, and vertical teaming on an annual basis.
  • Work with other visual arts teachers and comprehensive classroom teachers to improve educational offerings, such as, curriculum artists and artworks which engage active student dialog, curiosity, debate, and writing.
  • Display student work in high quality professional venues; competitions which lend credibility to college resumes; and in the school and community.
  • Work closely with local school administration to ensure that the arts are a valuable and viable part of the school curriculum.
  • Work closely with colleges, community, educational, arts, and business organizations to promote thinking and learning through the visual arts in the local community.
  • Work with the Visual Arts Coordinator, and /or the Executive Director Visual and Performing Arts in the coordination of the art program and projects throughout the district.
  • Work to establish and maintain a safe, secure, and orderly learning and working environment, in compliance with EPA and OSHA standards.
  • Participate in local, state and national Visual Arts organizations; attend local gallery and museum openings and free lectures at colleges; read professional journals and stay current with 21st Century skills.
  • Implement essential skills and knowledge in the digital arts as required for 21st Century skills.
  • Perform all other tasks and duties as assigned.
  • All federally funded incumbents of this position must comply with time and effort reporting requirements through personal activity reports or periodic certification, as appropriate.
  • Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position
WORK ENVIRONMENT:The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Travel throughout the district is integral to this job. A remote working environment /alternate work arrangement is not an option for campus-based employees/campus-based positions because regular and punctual attendance at the worksite and performing all duties at the worksite are essential job duties for all campus-based personnel.QualificationsBachelor's Degree from an accredited university; valid Texas teacher certificate with required endorsements for subject and subject level assigned. * Must have experience or demonstrated a desire to work in an urban school district.
  • Demonstrate understanding and ability to teach students with multiple learning styles and abilities.
  • Demonstrated an ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated basic visual arts skills.
  • Demonstrate personal artistic ability.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of art history and the application of art methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage students with 21st century teaching strategies such as Project Based Learning and technology integrated curriculum with computer programs such as Adobe Premier Elements and Photoshop Elements.
  • Demonstrated proficient to advance skill in the use of Internet, E-Mail, Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated writing and editing skills.
  • Demonstrated willingness to improve competency and teaching effectiveness by participating in professional growth opportunities and professional learning communities.
  • Demonstrated flexibility to cope with the challenges of a rapidly changing world
  • Demonstrated willingness to remain current with the latest developments in the profession
