Job Duties
- Conduct formal training on Ultrasound Technology for students enrolled in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Phase II training program at Nellis AFB, according to the USAF Medical Training Guidance for Non-Resident Medical Training Programs (MTG).
- Attend meetings scheduled by the Medical Training program Administrator (MTPA) and direct any questions regarding USAF MTG policies and guidance to the MTPA or Education Program Director (EPD).
- Monitor the progression of Phase II students in accordance with the Student Evaluation and Administration Plan (SEAP) and oversee permanent staff members in skill-level upgrade/duty qualification training.
- Perform a variety of ultrasound exams in accordance with established protocols, using appropriate imaging probes and accessories. These exams include obstetrical sonography, pelvic sonography, endovaginal sonography, abdominal sonography, small parts sonography, and limited vascular sonography.
- Prepare the ultrasound room using aseptic and sterile techniques and perform detailed studies based on the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) standards.
- Perform a variety of Digital Imaging Network-Picture Archiving Communication System (DIN-PACS) functions, ensuring completeness of US examinations for interpretation and utilizing digital imaging initiatives within the section and interfaces with other departments.
- Conduct daily reviews of section scanning images to ensure quality examinations for interpretation, monitor applicable Electronic Health Records, and uphold database integrity and swift radiologist reading capability.
- Perform administrative functions such as record archiving and retrieval, equipment and accessory maintenance, and periodic assessment and update of established protocols and screening devices.
- Perform numerous complex sonographic scanning on all anatomical areas for patients of all ages and assist radiologists and/or other physicians in performing invasive diagnostic techniques such as biopsies, aspirations, and intraoperative localization of lesions.
- Recognize anatomic variants and determine which other area(s) of the body should be scanned and advise the physician of results of the examination and provide them with a preliminary diagnosis.
-Notify physician of significant scans requiring immediate attention and maintain and clean ultrasound equipment on a regular basis in accordance with department standards.
- Stock and maintain an adequate level of supplies required to perform ultrasound examinations and make minor adjustments on equipment.
- Program the examination equipment, set up the machine and scanning techniques to be employed, and differentiate artifacts from normal or pathological processes and recognize electronic equipment limitations.
- Recognize the need for and institute the necessary emergency measures for situations where a person requires resuscitation procedures due to cardiac or respiratory arrest.
- Perform administrative duties such as printing ultrasound work schedules, arriving/departing patients, answering phone/scheduling patients for exams, and utilizing applicable Electronic Health Records systems.
- Participate in cross-training activities within the department and lead the Diagnostic Sonography training platform with training and student assessments. The responsibilities of a trainer include but are not limited to: training and assessing junior staff and student competence, explaining pathology and relevant anatomy, and monitoring appropriateness of care and completeness of examination request.Work Schedule:Normal duty hours are Monday - Friday, 9 hours between 7:00am and 5:00pmMay occasionally work irregular hours or shift work.May occasionally work on-call and call-back.No Holidays, No Weekends!The requirements for the position are as follows:
- Education: You must be currently registered as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
- Experience: You must have at least 3 years of full-time Ultrasound experience within the last 5 years. Although it is not mandatory, supervisory or instructing experience is preferred.
- Licensure/Registration: You must have current registration as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
- Life Support Certification: You must possess and maintain a current AHA or ARC BLS Healthcare Provider certification.
- Training: You must attend Basic Instructor Course (BIC), Principles of Instruction (POI), or Instructor Methodology within six months of position appointment.
- Security: You must possess the ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance. This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. You must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing. The use of illegal drugs by an employee poses a threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety.Benefits
