- The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a trip guide for mountain based trips/courses which can include rock/ice climbing, backcountry skiing, and avalanche education as part of the USAF A Outdoor Recreation Program.
- Maintain and prepare equipment for scheduled trips, de-rigging after trips, storing equipment properly, cleaning all equipment and rental items. Inform customers of risks before and while in terrain.
- Briefs participants on safety and first aid rules, initiate and/or directs group activities in and out of terrain.
- Other assigned duties such as: Kitchen cleanup, food preparation, packing supplies, cleaning storage area, and fixing equipment.
- Customers include a wide range of ages, abilities and backgrounds.
- Explains the program and answers questions related to trips/outing.
- Provides instruction and information about specific activities that correspond with the guests abilities.
- Performs required safety inspections on all outing equipment used.
- In charge of industry standard risk management specific to each activity guided and responsible for making safety and comfort related decisions and error corrections when appropriate.
- When required to drive a customer to or from the program sites, incumbent drives in a safe manner so as to not to endanger vehicle, equipment and customers.
- Aids Recreation Assistants with other activities as needed and when deemed appropriate considering the employee's experience with these activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- This position requires the incumbent to complete a background investigation with favorable results.
- This position requires the incumbent to complete a pre-employment physical.
- This position requires the incumbent to complete a pre-employment drug test.
- This position requires the incumbent to have a valid drivers license.
- This position requires the incumbent to provide a driving record from the state from which the incumbent has a valid driver’s license.
- This position requires an uncommon tour of duty to include nights/weekends and/or holidays.
- Must be at least 18 years old and have at least 4 years of experience in guiding/instructing climbing or backcountry skiing trips.
- Must have taken an AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Course (SPI) at time of employment and able to obtain SPI Certification within 6 months of employment in order to guide/instruct any rock or ice climbing programs.
- AMGA Rock Guide Course or higher and Alpine Skills Course/Guides Course and Ice Instructor Course highly desirable.
- For any backcountry ski/snowboard/general winter programs, incumbent must have taken an AIARE or AAI Level 1 course and Avalanche Rescue Course within the last 2 years and have at least 4 seasons of backcountry travel experience in a leadership position. Level 2 or Pro Level 1 and AMGA Ski Guide Course or AIARE Instructor status highly desirable.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills are required. Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English is required.
- Must be CPR/Wilderness First Aid Certified or higher.
- Must have the ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner.
- The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use.
- Position requires lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Individual must fully meet qualification/eligibility/background requirements for this position.
- Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.

- Pre-employment requirements must be satisfactorily met prior to Entrance on Duty (EOD).
