Major Duties and ResponsibilitiesSupervises an assigned crew of inmates; provides security for inmates and the general public. Supervises the cutting and cleaning of ditches. Supervises the repair of erosion problems by placing clay and filter fabric. Supervises the repair of cave-ins on storm drain systems. Supervises the repair of walls; lays and replaces pipes. Supervises the removal of trees from the storm drain system; supervises the grading of ditch lines. Supervises the placement of check dams and the placement of tri-locks. Supervises the landscaping of areas where pipes have been laid. Provides assistance to division work crews. Checks inmates for contraband; conducts regular inmate census. Drives inmate van. Performs other related duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of the principles and practices of the installation, maintenance and repair of storm water drainage systems. Knowledge of relevant Department of Corrections guidelines and federal and state laws pertaining to the incarceration of persons. Knowledge of the principles and practices of First Aid and CPR. Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in the installation, repair and maintenance of storm water systems. Skill in implementing policies and procedures. Skill in problem solving and decision-making. Skill in the supervision of inmate laborers. Skill in oral and written communication.Minimum Educational and Training RequirementsKnowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. No experience requirements. Possession of or ability to readily obtain certification by the Georgia Department of Corrections. This position is required to supervise state inmate labor. Employee must pass P.O.S.T. certification within the time frame required by this department, which is normally within six months but may be altered. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.Physical RequirementsThe work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color. The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
