- Performs gross examination of surgical specimens.
- Provides rotational coverage to the Autopsy Department for the prosection of Autopsy cases.
- Provides grossing coverage on a rotational basis as needed.
- Provides assistance in the education and training of residents with guidance from the Pathologists' Assistant Education Lead.
- Dictates a gross description and performs gross dissection per standard operating protocols of specimens received while maintaining positive patient identification.
- Will consult with attending pathologist/fellow on complex or unusual specimens.
- Performs special techniques, including but not limited to: frozen sectioning for immediate assessment, touch preps, cytogenetics tissue prep, flow cytometry, gene rearrangement, electron microscopy, decalcification, specimen radiology and STAT freezing.
- Provides coverage to the Postmortem Medicine Unit in the performance of autopsies.
- Provides grossing and/or prepping of tissue specimens to affiliate hospitals as needed on a rotation basis. Requires travel to sites.
- Completes research requests and clinical trials according to protocol, without compromising the diagnosis and evaluation of the specimen
- Trains pathology residents and histologists (as needed) in grossing and special techniques in the preparation of surgical pathology specimens.
- BLS and ACLS
- National Institutes of Health (NIH)
- Sound knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology.
- The ability to stand for extended periods.
- Strong technical skills.
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Passionate about patient care
- Master's Degree in Pathologists' Assistant
- Two years of Pathology Assistant experience
- NYS license (or ability to obtain BEFORE starting position)
- High level of problem-solving ability.
- Strong ability to integrate and interpret data from diverse sources to find solutions to very complex problems.
- Exercises judgement in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria in obtaining results.
- May be required to lift up to 50lbs
- One year of Epic experience
- Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills.
- Participates in relevant continuing education programs.
- Knowledge of and dedication to the highest patient care and provide the utmost service excellence to all patients.
- Ability to take initiative and to exercise independent judgment, decision-making and problem-solving expertise.
- A can-do, team oriented attitude is essential, as the ability to work independently and to interact easily with physicians, other managers and staff throughout the department and hospital.

- Physical Requirements - Must be able to push, pull, bend, and ambulate without assistance.
