STATEMENT OF THE JOBThe work of this position performs specific knowledge and skills relative to the booking, detention, handling and transporting of male and female prisoners under the supervision of the on-duty shift Sergeant in the Bureau of Patrol; however, incumbents often work without direct supervision and are expected to exercise independent initiative and mature judgment in maintaining a secure and orderly holding facility and in assuring safe transportation of prisoners. An employee in this class is subject to verbal and physical abuse from prisoners and, when necessary, may be required to physically search prisoners and use sufficient legal force to restrain violent/combative prisoners. Transport Officers work on an on-call basis and may be required to work weekends and/or holidays on occasion. This position is a Part-Time position with a 29-hour work week maximum.EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE/LICENSING & TRAININGEDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:High school diploma or GED, and any combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.NOTE: May be required to work weekends and/or holidays.LICENSING & TRAINING:
  • Valid State Driver's License.

  • Communicate verbally with prisoners, the general public, other City employees, Court officials, and other agency personnel in order to direct prisoners in compliance with fingerprinting and photographing procedures.
  • Discuss and verify charges with arresting officer.
  • Search and fingerprint prisoners; may also be required to testify in court.
  • Produce written documents including booking slips, fingerprint cards, checklists, memos, and department reports in order to transport prisoner(s).
  • Operate a motor vehicle, computer, typewriter, copier, printer, and camera in order to transport prisoner(s) in custody.
  • Enter information into the department records management system in order to prepare a prisoner for transport to the Mohave County Jail, or Court system.
  • Moves light objects short distances in order to feed, restrain, or move prisoner(s).
  • Properly restrain prisoner(s) for transport to and from the Mohave County Jail system.
  • Transfer prisoner(s) from one cell to another.
  • Operate a prisoner transport van requiring a standard Driver's License to transport prisoner(s) to various locations.
  • Secure, inventory, and document prisoner's personal property.
  • Observe and monitor the status and behavior of prisoner(s) in order to comply with prescribed operating and safety standards.
  • Observe, inspect, and monitor transport vehicles, including the cleanliness and orderliness of the vehicles in order to comply with prescribed operating and safety standards and to safeguard against any potential hazards.
  • Detect smoke or other toxic materials, which may affect the safety of prisoner(s).
  • Identify any contraband in the vehicles and document and/or notify appropriate personnel.
  • Use specialized, non-routine, protective equipment when exposed to hazardous agents and chemicals.
  • Assist officers in handling combative, uncooperative, and argumentative prisoner(s).
  • Determine when medical attention is required for prisoner(s) and facilitate obtaining the proper medical attention.
  • Complies with and promotes safety practices in agreement with the safety rules and procedures set forth in the Loss Control Program.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE:
  • Modern police practices and methods.
  • Operation and services normally provided by police departments; booking and detention of male, female and juvenile prisoners.
SKILLS:
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Police Services staff, City employees, City officials, and the general public.
  • Maintain confidential and sensitive information.
  • Carry out assigned projects to their completion.
  • Ability to enter data or information into a computer terminal, PC or other keyboard device.
ABILITIES:
  • Read and understand departmental City policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
  • Operate a computer terminal in order to book a prisoner into the City's holding facility.
  • Learn first aid and cardio pulmonary resuscitation procedures.
  • Deal effectively with upset individuals, and when required, use sufficient physical force to complete the booking and detention of City prisoners.
  • Recognize unusual medical, physical or mental conditions of prisoners.
  • Fingerprint and photograph prisoners.
  • Attention to detail and quickly carry-out procedural steps.
  • Deal tactfully and courteously with public.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and personnel from other agencies.
  • To use police radio, restraint devices, pepper spray and first aid equipment.
