SummaryThe Senior Vice President & Chief Operations Officer (SVP & COO) is accountable for directing and owning the results for system-wide operations and achieving cultural, quality, growth, innovation, strategic and financial goals to advance Mercy’s mission. The SVP & COO functions as a strategic partner to the President & CEO and Chief Financial Officer and advises/supports the Executive Team, Board of Trustees and Mercy Management Team on operational matters. When conflict arises, works effectively towards solutions and compromises that take the needs of all parties into account.Provides regular updates on goal progress and works with own manager to minimize risks and resolve problems.Job DutiesAccountable to the President & CEO as a trusted advisor to achieve system-wide operational results.Advances Mercy’s strategic objectives, fostering a culture of innovation, and spearheading infrastructure development for continued growth.Drives system-wide operational and clinical efficiency while effectively managing productivity and labor expense.Oversees multiple service lines and departments including Pharmacy, Laboratory and Radiology.Collaborates with the Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Medical Officer to improve quality, safety and patient experience.Collaborates with the Chief Financial Officer to drive strategic financial initiatives and achieve results.Sets strategy, executes plans and achieves budgeted targets. Oversees the preparation of annual operating budgets and capital budgets.Develops and fosters effective collaboration between clinical departments, medical staff leadership, and other affiliated services to ensure an integrated approach to providing patient care and service.Develops new business strategies to enhance market share and improve overall performance.Expands Mercy’s outreach activities and referral networks to ensure effective partnerships are formed which will facilitate the development of a comprehensive and geographically dispersed integrated health care system.Drives development, modernization and innovation across the system, promoting a culture of continuous improvement.Provides leadership and direction to direct reports and holds them accountable for achieving results.Maintains health care industry and operations knowledge to serve as an information resource.Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job- specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesProven track record of successful operational performance and strategic results in complex healthcare environments.Strong operational skills and a growth orientation with the ability to balance quality, patient experience, efficiency, and financial performance.Strong commitment to operations innovation and redesigning care systems.Demonstrated success with developing effective, trusting, credible and collaborative relationships with physicians and providers.Ability to enhance market share through optimizing service line and system operations.Strong collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to build and lead teams, with a relationship-based approach with leaders, physicians/providers/clinicians, staff and community partners, balanced with business and operational acumen.Excellent technical knowledge concerning all aspects of healthcare industry operational matters and the ability to apply this knowledge effectively to the full range of EVP/COO duties and responsibilities.Superior written/verbal communication and presentation skillsSuperior strategic planning, critical thinking, financial analysis, contract management, negotiation, problem solving and judgment abilities.Well-developed, credible, inspirational and motivational leadership skills including the ability to set a clear direction, inspire others and assume command.Highly effective skills in team development, delegation, performance management, mentoring, recruitment/retention and change management.Extensive knowledge of the principles, procedures, and best practices in the healthcare industry.Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.Professional ExperienceA minimum of ten (10) years of progressive health care operations leadership experience in a large multi-service healthcare organization with at least five (5) years at an executive level required.Experience leading multiple healthcare operational departments required.Strong evidence of previously successful results in developing and directing staff, in consistently evaluating their performance and providing leadership for their ongoing professional growth required
