WSDOT is currently seeking two Highway Maintenance Workers (HMW2) to join our team. Operating under the direction of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, these pivotal night shift roles involve the operation of a diverse range of heavy highway equipment to maintain and repair highways and structures. Ensuring the safe and efficient flow of people and commerce, these positions encompass highly skilled maintenance tasks, including traffic control and the upkeep of the I-90 and SR 99 tunnels. Additionally, there may be opportunities to lead a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3. Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:
  • Engage in manual labor for asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance, drainage, signage installation, guardrail maintenance, and other infrastructure tasks.
  • Address internal and external customer requests for various maintenance and repair tasks within Area 4 (Kent) and Area 5 (Seattle/Bellevue).
  • Utilize Vactor, tunnel washer machine, sweeper, hydraulic excavator, backhoe, bulldozers, and road graders for maintenance activities.
  • Offer guidance and training to subordinate employees on the operation of equipment.
  • Plan and implement traffic control measures, including road or bridge closures, following departmental and MUTCD standards.
  • Clean roadways by removing litter, dead animals, and other debris.
  • Manage inventory and section features using the MAP system.
  • Record and report daily work activities using an iPad or PC.
  • Operate trucks equipped with plow, sander, and deicer applicator to remove snow and ice from road surfaces.
  • Respond to accident scenes, spills, and other emergencies, coordinating traffic control and communicating progress to supervisors and internal customers.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity at the (In-Training) level, the following are required:
  • One (1) year of experience performing maintenance activities or equivalent. Education from a trade school may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Ability to obtain Washington State CDL Class A driver's license with endorsement "N" and without air brake restriction and no transmission restrictions within 12 months of employment.
To be considered for this opportunity at the level, the following are required:
  • High school graduation or GED and two (2) years of highway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, or heavy equipment experience.
OR
  • One (1) year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or equivalent.
AND
  • Valid Washington State CDL Class A driver's license with endorsement “N” and without air brake restriction, with a valid medical card.
In addition to the above, the following is requiredfor either level:
  • Ability to operate Class A, B, and C equipment w/current technology in highway maintenance operations.
  • Ability to manipulate up to 50 pounds in a safe manner.
  • Ability to work the night shift (Monday - Thursday, 8:00 PM to 6:30 AM) and be available for standby duty and callouts, including alternate and emergency shifts, as needed for winter operations. This may require more than 40 hours per week.
  • Ability to work long hours outside in different weather conditions, navigate steep terrain, and work at heights over 25 feet. Hazards consistent with maintenance operations in high-traffic areas, including confined spaces, are present. Sharps, bloodborne pathogens, and other hazardous materials may also be encountered.
It is preferredthat qualified candidates also have the following:
  • Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging Card.
  • Washington State Pesticide Applicator's License.
  • Backflow Prevention Tester Certification.
  • Valid Washington State CDL Class A driver's license with endorsement N and without air brake restriction with manual transmission.
Important Notes
  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
  • This position is not eligible for remote work.
  • The assigned work schedule for these positions is Night Shift: Mon. - Thu., 8:00 PM to 6:30 AM. The incumbent must be available for standby when assigned and callouts. The incumbent may also need to work alternate and emergency shifts hours for wintertime operations or as situations dictate. This may be more than 40 hours per week on an as-needed basis.
  • The salary listed includes the legislative-approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County. An additional 10% Assignment Pay is also included.
  • The position is also eligible for an additional $2.00 per hour for Night Shift.
  • This is a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 (HMW2) position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level - Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (HMW1) - depending on qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.
  • HMW1: $52,384 - $63,507
  • HMW2: $59,091 - $71,953
