PROVISIONAL OPENING FOR SUPPORT INVESTIGATOR
There is a provisional opening in the Allegany County Department of Social Services for the position of Support Investigator.**Provisional candidate must pass the examination for this position and be ranked among the top three (3) candidates and receive an offer of employment for this position.**Residency - Candidates must be residents of Allegany County or a contiguous county for at least one month prior to the date of exam.DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Performs a combination of assignments in connection with determining eligibility for financial assistance, for medical assistance and/or for food stamps and verifying continued eligibility. The work involves the review, evaluation and verification of applications and records and direct interviews with applicants. Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher ranking Social Welfare Examiner. Leeway is allowed for the performance of duties in accordance with established policies and procedures. Does related work as required.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
  • Interviews petitioners and respondents, make collateral contacts and researches computer system files to obtain and document information related to the computer system files to obtain and document information related to the whereabouts, income and resources of absent parents;
  • Interviews unwed mothers and putative fathers in order to establish paternity, either through voluntary admission or Court determination. Arranges for genetic testing, as warranted;
  • Compiles information necessary to obtain a Family Court order for child support;
  • Conducts periodic reviews related to the financial status of absent parents and adjusts the amount of child support due to his/her children accordingly, based upon established criteria;
  • Enforces child support orders by various means, including wage deduction, filing of judgments, initiating processes for the taking of licenses, and IRS and NYS Taxation income tax offsets;
  • Furnishes State and National Parent Locator Systems with required information and utilizes information retrieved from these systems in order to make contact with absent parents and with the authorities in jurisdiction in which they reside;
  • Makes field investigations, as necessary;
  • Prepares reports as necessary;
  • Maintains a continuous case file of progress, results of investigations, and documentation;
  • Performs other duties related to obtaining and enforcing Child Support Orders, as assigned
FULL PERFORMANCES, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of investigative techniques used in determining paternity and the location and financial status of individuals; working knowledge of office terminology and modern methods used in keeping and checking financial records and reports; ability to understand and interpret laws concerning support cases; ability to prepare written materials; ability to establish and maintain electronic records and to retrieve and apply electronically stored data.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Open Competitive:
A. Graduation from high school and two years of interviewing or investigating experience involving public contact; or,
B. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice or a Human Services field.Promotional:
