The Hematology Department's Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist conducts medical laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses to provide information for disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. The Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist follows established accreditation guidelines and quality control standards to perform their essential functions and responsibilities, including but not limited to the following:
1. Conducts chemical analyses of blood, urine, spinal fluids, and gastric juices to determine normal and abnormal components of body fluids.
2. Counts and identifies cells using microscopic techniques and procedures to analyze blood cells.
3. Conducts blood group, type, and compatibility tests to prepare blood, plasma, and platelets for transfusions.
4. Processes, reads, and reports cultures from various sources, as well as antibiotic sensitivities and other microbiology procedures.
5. Maintains laboratory equipment such as analyzers, spectrophotometers, colorimeters, and flame photometers by calibrating, completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer's instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, calling for repairs, maintaining equipment inventories, evaluating new equipment and techniques.
6. Verifies receipt of supplies, checks stock to determine inventory level, anticipates needed supplies, places and expedites orders for supplies to maintain laboratory supplies inventory.
7. Uses equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results, conserving laboratory resources.
8. Answers questions and requests to provide medical technology information.
9. Collects, analyzes, and summarizes information to prepare reports of technological findings.
10. Attends educational workshops, reviews professional publications, establishes personal networks, and participates in professional societies to maintain professional and technical knowledge.
11. Works in compliance with all established QA/QI standards.
12. Maintains a safe and clean working environment and protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control, hazardous waste, and other policies and protocols.
13. Identifies the cause of problems and implements solutions where appropriate, as well as orients and trains new employees.Shift Notes:1.0 FTE, Nights, M-F 10:30p-7aQualifications
The following qualifications are required for the position of Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Technician: a Bachelor's degree in medical technology or a related field, or an associate degree in medical technology or a related field; MT Certification or MLS Certification; and ASCP eligibility, which includes being a new grad. HM is open to considering a MLT that is already ASCP Certified.
