Come discover all that Ithaca, New York and Cayuga Health has to offer!Position Overview:The role of the Pre Admission Testing Registered Nurse is to prepare patient for a surgical procedure in collaboration with the physician care team. Responsible for oversight of the intake process for performing initial assessments and interviews of patients to ensure their surgical readiness. PAT nurse will provide guidance and support to the Surgical Services team; as well as direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of evidenced base nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of the Pre Admission Testing RN includes (but are not limited to the following):What you'll do:
  • Conduct thorough assessments of patients scheduled for surgical or invasive procedures to evaluate their physical and emotional readiness.
  • Review patients' medical histories, including pre-existing conditions, allergies, medications, and previous surgeries, to identify potential risks or complications to surgery.
  • Coordinates diagnostic tests such as blood work, ECGs, X-rays, and other assessments as required to ensure patients are medically optimized for their procedures.
  • Provide patients and their families with detailed information about the upcoming procedure, including what to expect, preoperative instructions, and potential risks.
  • Work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans for each patient.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records, including preoperative assessments, test results, and communication with the healthcare team.
  • Adhere to strict infection control protocols and ensure that patients are screened for contagious illnesses to minimize the risk of surgical site infections.
  • Monitor and address any safety concerns related to the patient's condition, such as allergies, fall risk, or other vulnerabilities.

  • This position will be 9am-5pm or 10am-6pm
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education: Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an accredited nursing program.
  • Licensure: Current NYS RN License
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are typically required.
  • Compassion: A compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care, as well as the ability to alleviate patient anxiety, is highly valuable. Exceptional telephone etiquette.
  • Exceptional customer service and telephone etiquette.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience: 1-3 years preoperative, critical care preferred
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Prior nursing experience in perioperative or preoperative settings is preferred. Familiarity with preoperative assessment and care protocols is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in patient assessment, venipuncture, and administering medications. Knowledge of diagnostic tests and their interpretation is essential.
  • Attention to Detail: The ability to meticulously review medical records and ensure accurate documentation is essential to patient safety and care quality.
Physical Requirements:
  • Able to lift 20 pounds. Moving, lifting or transferring patients may involve lifting of up to 50 pounds. Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods.
