Designs and constructs display materials as required. Assists with moving, maintenance, and security of collections.REQUIREMENTS:1. Educational Level:Bachelor's degree in fine arts or closely related design field preferred2. Experience:2 years job related experience preferred. Comparable experiences and training.3. Physical Activities:Museum office hours are 8:00 to 5:00 Monday through Friday. Some evening and weekend work may be required as needed. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment. Work may occasionally require periods of exposure to outdoor weather conditions. May occasionally operate equipment that shakes or vibrates. Will occasionally work in high, precarious places or near moving mechanical parts. Daily exposure to a shop environment with power tools. Work environment may vary from quiet to high noise levels.The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to 50 pounds (or greater mass that requires assistance); climbing and balancing; stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 35% walking, and 55% standing.4. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:The incumbent must have knowledge of museum standards for exhibit design, fabrication and installation, including safety requirements associated with such work. Must have knowledge of handling art and historical artifacts in accordance with standard museum conservation practices; must be proficient in handling fragile pieces without damage. Must have a working knowledge of art and artifact conservation display methods, techniques, and procedures. Skill in carpentry and fabrication; understanding of advanced construction and structure, carpentry techniques and methods of installation and construction. Must have skill in the operation of power and hand tools used in woodworking; skill in light welding and working with foam core, Plexiglas, fabrics, paints and other finishes. Must be proficient at using measurement tools and math applications; ability to read technical documents, drawings and blue prints a plus; design skills helpful. Basic computer skills are required, including skill with Adobe Programs: Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign preferred. Must have a valid driver's license and good driving record. Must be a self-motivated team player. Ability to work independently with little direct supervision and to multi-task. Must have strong attention to detail and the ability to follow precise instructions. Must have excellent communication, time management and organizational skills; and a proven ability to consistently meet deadlines.ESSENTIAL DUTIES:1.Assist installing permanent galleries and temporary exhibitions, including but not limited to the fabrication of exhibits; installing objects, labels, text panels, graphics; creating hands-on interactives; and lighting, as well as preparation of galleries for installation by doing light construction, patching and painting.2.Assist de-installing permanent galleries and temporary exhibits, including but not limited to removal or relocation of artwork and artifacts, removal of all exhibition materials, and safely housing objects, frames and installation materials.3.Framing: mat and frame artwork, in accordance with standard museum conservation practices; including building and assembling frames, and cutting mat board.4.Produce exhibit mounts and supports, in accordance with standard museum conservation practices; including furniture and archival supports for housing and displaying artifacts and artwork.5.Produce and install labels and text panels, according to museum standards and with curatorial approval.6.Assist in the maintenance and storage of installation materials, storage areas and wood shop; including routine maintenance, cleanliness and safety of work shop, fabrication area and equipment.7.Assist in creating and implementing lighting design of permanent and temporary exhibitions, in accordance with museum standards and practices and as approved by the Exhibition Designer and the Curator.8.Adhere to the schedule and meet all deadlines set forth; continually update the Exhibition Coordinator and Designer on the status of ongoing installations and projects.9.Assist in implementing exhibition display design, as developed by and in accordance with the Exhibition Coordinator and Designer.10.Design and construct (or purchase) crates, display cases, and any related items as required, in budget.11.Purchase and acquire any and all materials needed for aforementioned items, as approved by the Exhibition Coordinator and Designer. Responsible for turning in any and all receipts, bills of lading and packing lists to the Exhibition Coordinator and Designer in a timely manner.12.Perform routine checks and maintenance of permanent galleries and temporary exhibitions: inspecting, caring, replacing and repairing exhibit items, including the lighting. Other responsibilities may involve drywall spackling and finishing, painting, sanding, and cleaning as part of maintenance of galleries and exhibitions.13.Responsible for the maintenance of all gallery guides, literature and comment books within the galleries. Coordinate the distribution of all such materials to Security.
