Job Description:SUMMARY:Educate, train and maintain requirements and endorsements for Bus Drivers and Transportation Paraprofessionals. Investigate accidents. Set up recruiting to obtain prospective applicants. Coordinate and instruct students and drivers in school bus safety evacuation programs. Evaluate existing programs to improve and develop new training programs for staff. May assist with translation and/or communication using second language skills when possible.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Daily50%Set up and maintain driver training programs. Maintain training records according to state, federal and District regulations. Instruct classes in First Aid, CPR, driving in adverse weather and mountain terrain, awareness, defensive driving, substance abuse, sexual harassment, child abuse, student management, Bloodborne pathogens (BBP), safe clean up and prevention of disease transmission. Provide training and testing for school bus drivers, maintenance and mechanic workers to obtain commercial driver's license (CDL), BPS2. Provide small vehicle training to coaches, teachers and transition drivers as required by CDE.Daily10%Develop, coordinate, schedule and conduct in-service training, safety and staff development classes as directed by the Director, Transportation.Daily7%Instruct drivers, paraprofessionals and transition drivers on proper and safe usage of wheelchair lifts including applying safety restraints as well as the placement of wheelchairs on the bus. Train on the proper usage of car seats, lap belts, safety vests and any child restraint systems designed for the safe transportation of students. Educate drivers and paraprofessionals on specific medical conditions and adaptations that may be required for safe transportation. Conduct in-home visits to evaluate students' health concerns and special needs. Instruct and assist Drivers and Paraeducators with evacuation plans for special needs and students requiring the use of wheelchairs.Daily3%Coordinate and log special equipment check-out/check-in for Bus Drivers and Paraeducators. Check equipment to ensure it is in proper working order, perform minor repairs, clean equipment and discard equipment if necessary.Daily2%Assist in other areas of the department such as driving routes as needed. Attend to situations requiring assistance on routes and stops. Assist in the dispatch and scheduling office, monitoring the radio and receiving route calls.Mnthly10%Conduct annual driver assessments on all department employees as dictated by Colorado Department of Education (CDE) guidelines. Conduct on-the-job assessments of department Paraeducators.Mnthly6%Investigate accidents; file required reports with the District and state. Input information on accidents into database, take pictures and print photos of accidents. Set up documentation packets for Accident Review (AR). Retrain driver per recommendation of AR. Maintain manuals for the use of AR.Mnthly5%Coordinate, schedule and conduct American Red Cross First Aid and CPR training for all departmental staff.Mnthly2%Coordinate testing and licensing as dictated by the Colorado Department of Revenue CDL compliance office for all department employees requiring a CDL. Maintain CDL testing documentation and submit a monthly report to the CDL compliance office.Mnthly1%Assist with interviewing and hiring of department personnel.Qrtly1%Stay current with federal and state regulations and compliance by attending industry training conferences. Participate on department, District and state committees.Qrtly1%Develop, coordinate, schedule and conduct small vehicle training as dictated by District policies and state regulations.Daily2%Perform other duties as assigned.EDUCATION AND TRAINING:High school diploma or equivalent, plus post-secondary courses equivalent to one year of college in Commercial License Driver Examiner training, Red Cross First Aid/CP instructor training, Federal motor vehicle safety standards and special needs transportation law.EXPERIENCE:Over five years of experience in school transportationSKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EQUIPMENT, OTHER:Oral communication, interpersonal, public speaking, word processing and basic writing skills. Advanced knowledge of CPR/First Aid; federal, state and local motor vehicle law and safety regulations; motor vehicle accident response; and driving skills. Operating knowledge of and experience with school bus operation, wheelchair lifts, presentation equipment, digital camera and office equipment. English language skills required. Oral and written fluency in second language may be preferred or required based on building assignment.CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:Valid BP2S endorsed commercial driver's license (CDL), Department of Transportation physical, CDL Driving Skill Testing Examiner License, and Red Cross Instructor Certification. Employee will be required to drive one or more District vehicles. Employee must maintain a driving record that meets the standards of the District insurance policy.SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY:Indirectly supervises Bus Drivers (96), Paraeducators (30) and Transportation Trainer (1). Spends over 75 of time conducting supervisory responsibilities that includes training employees and appraising performance. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Acts as a technical resource for the Transportation Department on special education law regarding transportation, specialized equipment and computers.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.WORK ENVIRONMENT:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outdoor weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.MENTAL FUNCTIONS:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and use interpersonal skills. The employee is frequently required to coordinate, instruct, evaluate, and negotiate. The employee is occasionally required to compare, analyze, copy and compile.
