WORKING CONSTRUCTION SUPERINTENDENTThe project superintendent’s responsibility is to supervise the field construction of a project and to complete the work on schedule, within budget and to the quality of workmanship specified. The construction superintendent is a Working Superintendent. In the performance of this function, it is the project superintendent’s responsibility to protect and promote BECK CONSTRUCTION & EXCAVATION’s interests in all matters and to whatever is reasonably necessary to discharge his duties and responsibilities which include, but are not limited to the following:
  • The working construction superintendent oversees all phases of a construction project from initial planning to completion. They need to have thorough and complete knowledge and understanding of the general contract, each subcontract, the contract drawings, specifications and addenda, and to assist the project manager in the development of the on-site procedures.
  • The working construction superintendent will supervise the foremen, who in turn may supervise the workers. The superintendent may also manage the workers directly as well. Supervision might involve assigning teams to specific jobs and directing workers about tasks to be performed.
  • The working construction superintendent will work with the crew members operating, assisting on the job as necessary to get the work completed and training the crew members to complete the work safely, efficiently and to the highest level of quality.
  • They will provide leadership to establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships of the on-site staff and to promote a positive project morale.
  • The superintendent will be involved in pre-construction estimates and budgets. As the project progresses, they monitor expenses to ensure that they are meeting budget. They will track the inventory, supplies and materials (with help from the Foreman) to guard against loss and ensure that vital materials are ordered and delivered to meet schedule.
  • The construction superintendent must coordinate the activities of a variety of tradespeople, professionals and laborers. They may need to work closely with the engineer who designed the project. Superintendents must plan work schedules so that conflicts do not occur, such as having a crane operator report before the item to be lifted has been fabricated or delivered.
  • The superintendent is required to plan and review the construction program with the Project Manager including quality control procedures, safety and security practices, field office location and layout, temporary utilities, staging areas, equipment and manpower.
  • The superintendent is required to review and approve subcontractor’s monthly requests for payment.
  • The superintendent is required to review and approve all time and material work vouchers and invoices.
  • The superintendent, with the assistance of the foremen, is responsible in maintaining good relations and communications with all involved in the project including the public.
Skills required:Employees must be able to read blue prints, understand project cost analysis and effectively use the following computer programs:
  • Microsoft Office Suite and Projects
  • 10 Years’ experience as an active working superintendent
Certificates and Licenses (Must be obtained within a reasonable time period):
  • 30 Hour OSHA Training
  • ATSSA Certified Traffic Control Maintainer/Supervisor
  • ACI Certified Concrete Flatwork Finisher
  • RSI (Registered Stormwater Inspector)
