The Mary Campbell Center is first, last, and always home to 68 residents. The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for leading The Center's health care professional team in achieving a truly homelike environment in which MCC residents live with respect, personal dignity, and independence to the fullness of their abilities. The DON is charged with championing the Guiding Principles and mission of The Center in a manner that ensures compliance with State and Federal regulations. The DON must be a positive role model who reliably works effectively, efficiently, and with respect for residents, staff, families, volunteers, professional consultants, and the physical environment of The Center.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:The Director of Nursing at the Mary Campbell Center must 1) be a good person of high character who demonstrates compassion and understanding, consistently works with a positive attitude and advocates effectively on behalf of residents who have varying degrees of disabilities and 2) be a graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; possess a current R.N. license in the State of Delaware; have a minimum of five years of clinical nursing experience (some acute-care experience preferred); and three years documentable experience managing/supervising nursing personnel. Previous successful experience working with patients with disabilities and/or in a rehabilitative setting is preferred. The Director of Nursing must also be CPR certified and possess effective leadership abilities, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and proficiency in utilizing technology tools to effectively manage resident health reporting and to achieve individual, department and mission goals.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Ensures that all Health Care staff performs at a high level of effectiveness as a result of supervision through regular observations, performance appraisals, coaching or counseling sessions, specific training, and disciplinary action if needed; aligning staff expectations.
  • Makes daily rounds of the facility assessing resident condition and maintaining open communication with staff and residents. Must make round at least 2 times per month for the night shift.
  • Acts as the primary liaison regarding Health Care services at the Center and communicates regularly with physicians, health care agency staff, families, and residents regarding questions or concerns.
  • Responsible for interviewing, hiring, evaluating, and terminating nurses, RCT's and other employees of the Health Care Department. Works closely in partnership with human resources director.
  • Ensures that all Health Care staff receives timely annual performance appraisals.
  • Creates and participates in the on-call schedule with Nurse managers for Health Care needs or emergencies. In exigent circumstances, works as a Neighborhood Nurse.
  • Participates in overall leadership of The Mary Campbell Center as part of the Senior Management Team. Participates in Administrator-on-call (as a NHA). In the event of an emergency, reports to The Center to provide support and provide necessary and sufficient direction and leadership.
  • Actively engages in interviewing, researching, and evaluating the needs of resident and respite care applicants by participating in the Admissions Committee meetings.
  • Acts as primary liaison to the pharmacy consultant and State Board of Pharmacy. ensures compliance with State/Federal and regulations regarding pharmacy practices.
  • Ensures that compliance with State and Federal regulations relating to nursing care in an active treatment environment is provided to all residents. Is responsible for writing and reviewing Plans of Correction (POC's) for any Health Care related survey deficiencies.
  • Responsible for writing and implementing health care nursing policies and procedures. Responsible for updating policies and procedures as well.
  • Develops and maintains Nursing Standards of "best practice" and related policies and procedures for the Health Care Department.
  • Participates in the annual MCC budget development process. Responsible for keeping approved Health Care Department expenditures within budgeted levels. Approves and evaluates Health Care Department needs and purchases, and monitors expenditures throughout the year.
  • Prepares/processes payroll for healthcare team.

  • Together with ADON, represents the Health Care Department through membership or participation in internal committees (Quality Assessment and Assurance Committee, QAPI Committee, Admissions Committee, Human Rights Committee, HIPAA Committee, Safety and Emergency Operations Committee).
  • Demonstrates continuous quality improvement within the Health Care Department. Reviews, at regular intervals, the results of clinical QA reports and actively directs any necessary interventions to ensure quality health services are being provided to the residents.
  • Coordinates the renewal of consultant contracts maintained by the Health Care Department and Clinical Services.
  • Ensures compliance with safety standards and OSHA regulations within the Health Care Department. Promotes safe practices by staff.
  • As needed, reports allegations of Abuse, Neglect, Exploitation (ANE), conducts internal investigations and follow-up reporting as required by the State of Delaware, Division of Healthcare Quality
  • Addresses any complaints made regarding the health care services at MCC through the MCC Complaint/Grievance Process.
  • Completes all mandatory in-services and attends staff meetings as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
