Job Description:OverviewThis role will lead the management and execution of Sprouts Brand (SB) Quality management to drive SB quality perception. Direct responsibility for managing the quality assessment of all non-perishable SB items and working in partnership with the Sprouts Culinary team for Fresh item quality assessment. Lead creating and delivering an in depth sensory and quality assessment program for all SB products, including those items on shelf, in development and those with any complaints.Oversee the efficient operation and management of the Sensory Kitchen and associated Presentation room facilities, including the budget for sampling. Partner with cross functional teams during new item development process to ensure alignment on quality assessment including identifying suitable comparison products and standards. Build quality specifications for Sprouts Brand products.This role is also responsible for maintaining and driving product packaging & labeling consistency. Primary responsibilities include the approval and review of claims evidence, labels, advertising, regulatory acceptability of ingredients, and critical analysis/strategic solutions to ensure regulatory compliance, working with Legal Counsel (internal/external) where necessary. Provide technical support for regulatory compliance. Review and audits labels and product information documents for technical accuracy and compliance. Perform on-going corrective action monitoring. Support the development and maintenance of nutritional and regulatory technical information for ingredients and products. Provide technical support for responses to customer complaints and inquiries.Direct line management of a Sensory Specialist.
Overview of Responsibilities
  • Lead execution of SB sensory and quality assessment program
  • Deliver and maintain consistent product quality within brand promise by being an active unbiased participant in the sensory phases of product development, being part of the team approving reformulations, packaging, sourcing and specification changes.
  • Deliver day-to-day communication, support, and action-orientated reports following quality and sensory assessments.
  • Intake and prioritize unplanned Quality/Sensory projects from merchandising and SB CSM team
  • Monitor, maintain and optimize execution of cloud-based sensory software. Make appropriate recommendations based on analysis.
  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) for SB quality management process and regulatory compliance
  • Ensure all SB items (on shelf and in development) are in compliance with Sprouts Ingredients requirements and other standards e.g. sustainability, nutritional requirements.
  • Maintenance of Sprouts Ingredient Standards list
  • Keep up to date with key labeling regulations related to SB items.
  • Ensure that ingredients and nutritional statements on production art files, printed material and web-based data are 100% accurate and comply with FDA and USDA labeling regulations.
  • Communicate and consult with category teams, Legal, product developers, and vendors on any specific packaging & labeling inconsistencies in order to identify and implement actions which will enhance a product’s quality & compliance.
  • Create SOPs to ensure SB items meet regulatory and company requirements.
  • Review and approve proposed label claims and evidence are regulatory compliant and scientifically supportable, including evaluation of risk when needed.
  • Verify claim substantiation documents are updated and appropriately documented.
  • Keep abreast of the current and proposed regulations.
  • Research and communicate with internal stakeholders on packaging & labeling requirements for new product types, benchmarking against similar products in our industry.

Qualifications
  • Preferred Bachelor Degree or related experience in Nutrition, Food Science, or related discipline with a minimum of three (3) years of Food labeling, Quality, R&D experience, or regulatory compliance preferred
  • Product knowledge of grocery industry
  • Requires good organizational and planning skills
  • Ability to preserve confidentiality of information, communicate with all levels of management and work within strict time frames and resolute deadlines
  • Thorough understanding Microsoft Office suite
  • Some travel may be required
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively with multiple stakeholders
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Detail orientated
  • Must be fluent in oral and written English and be able to report and understand scientific data.
  • Must be able to read and interpret USDA and FDA regulations concerning labeling and nutrition
  • Excellent/proven analytical and reasoning skills
  • Must be able to conduct statistical analyses of data and identify trends
