Description :POSITION SUMMARYPerforms assigned projects, procedures, or tasks at a level of independent expertise, involving the installation, calibration, testing, inspection, repair and maintenance of all types and kinds of non revenue power quality instruments, BES Transmission protective relaying equipment, and BES Transmission control systems. Also performs Transmission protective relaying and controls programming, testing, and installation in collaboration with foreign utilities upon request. Directs the activities of assigned Transmission Relay Technicians, of lower classification, in order to maintain effective and reliable protective relaying and control systems on the Transmission system.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assures safe work practices are recognized and implemented on the job.
  • Performs, at a level of independent expertise, and directs the performance of Transmission Relay Technicians B, and C in the installation, testing, calibration, repair, and maintenance of: Panel indicating instruments; Transducers; Recorders; Electro-mechanical relays; Solid state relays; Switchboard indicating instruments and switchboard annunciators; Automatic oscillographs; Other associated protective control equipment.
  • Works with Transmission Working Foreman to coordinate project and maintenance work.
  • Perform maintenance testing on Transmission system equipment.
  • Monitors work in progress and provides feedback in order to maintain schedules.
  • Performs operational tests of various types for the purpose of verifying proper operation of Transmission protective relaying systems and solid-state controls.
  • Reviews the specifications of newly acquired equipment and performs operational check-outs and verifications of quality and quantity to make recommendations concerning equipment acceptability.
  • Assists in SCADA checkout with the Communications Department.
  • Maintains supporting software specific to Transmission system relaying and controls equipment including, but not limited to, SEL Accelerator Quickset, USI Fault Recorder software, Beckwith software, Doble Protection Suite, ApsenDB Relay Database.
  • Performs or coordinates equipment calibrations on, but not limited to, Fluke and Doble test sets.
  • Makes sketches, takes notes, draws graphs, completes reports, and provides any other raw data in order to maintain complete and accurate records about the installation, testing, repair and maintenance of Transmission relaying equipment and reports any abnormal or potentially dangerous conditions to the appropriate supervisor(s) in a responsible and timely fashion.
  • Maintains a working familiarity with and makes approved field corrections to blueprints of Transmission relaying and control systems in order to verify proper installation and practicality; incorporates approved field corrections and modifications onto departmental blueprints and assures that departmental files are maintained with the latest revisions.
  • Applies fault studies and other system studies towards checking fuse and relay coordination; analyzes relay settings in order to make recommendations for changes in relay and protective schemes.
  • Performs standard tests and verifies associated secondary circuits of current and potential associated with Transmission protective relaying and control systems.
  • Calculates non revenue meter ratios and multipliers and checks and recommends current transformer sizes to protect against overloading of protective relaying and control secondary circuits.
  • Keeps abreast of technological developments in equipment or techniques regarding transmission protective relaying and control systems.
  • Makes periodic inspections and, in general, is responsible for the proper utilization, maintenance, and security of assigned tools, test equipment, vehicles and work areas.
  • Performs all assigned projects within the specifications of Hoosier Energy’s general switching instructions and equipment clearance procedures; performs switching procedures, when directed.
  • Provides training and instruction assistance, as needed, for the Distribution Relay Technician HEATS Apprenticeship program.
  • Reviews with and provides appropriate input to the Transmission Relay Working Foreman or the Area Coordinator, Meter Relay, and provides recommendations about practices, procedures, system requirements, or improvements in order to facilitate maintenance schedules, short- or long-range plans, and any other efficiencies or cost improvements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB SPECIFICATIONSEducation:
  • High School or GED minimum
  • Associate’s Degree in electronic technology, computer technology, or process control technology or its equivalent in military training and service preferred
  • Completion of Non Indentured HEATS Program preferred
Experience:
  • Four Years of Electrical Utility experience in Relay Technician or related field minimum
Skills and Abilities:
  • Written and oral communication skills
  • Problem Solving and decision making abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with varying scopes and timelines.
  • Ability to communicate with individuals at all levels and work as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated level of professionalism, positive attitude, and ability to work with others.
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license.
Working Conditions:
  • Potential after hours call outs
  • Must maintain a CDL Medical Certificate
  • Primarily field environment
